Bilsborrow FC claim 2019 St Andrews Cup

THERE’S a new name on the ‘Leyland Leader St Andrews Cup’ as Bilsborrow FC, from Preston’s ‘North End’ lifted the trophy.

This year, the popular competition attracted ten teams for the fourth annual seven-a-side football contest at the Lancashire FA HQ on Thurston Road.

Two group stages, with five teams in each, were played out in brilliant sunshine. The top four teams then contested the semi-finals. In the ensuing final, a single goal confirmed Bilsborrow FC as overall winners as they defeated another new ‘St Andrew’s Cup’ entrant, South Ribble Purple, 1-0.

Bilsborrow FC skipper Jonathan Hallam received the trophy from Ruth Bradshaw, representing regular sponsors Leyland Leader. His team-mate Joe Bentley, with five
goals to his name, claimed the ‘Golden Boot’ trophy.

Jon Hallam said: “It was tough in the heat but a great competition, very well organised and well run. We are a Summer league team and this was a good workout
for us. All being well, we will be back next year.”

One of the organisers Calvin Wallace, who also captained the ‘Irish’ entrants, Green Brazil, gave a short ‘mission’ talk between rounds. With great passion and
convincing honesty, he told how giving his life to Jesus has turned his whole approach to life around.

Fellow organiser Adam McAllister said: “It’s been a great tournament, once again we were blessed with fine weather. We’re grateful to everyone who contributed in any
way, particularly Leyland Leader for their ongoing sponsorship, Towngate Shoes for trophies and medals, BusinessGiftsUK.com for the loan of a gazebo and
10ofThose.com for the Christian books we presented to every player. It’s a real team effort, we will be back next year.”
