Coronation Street’s Steve McDonald, it has been revealed, is the big name who will throw the switch to Light Up Leyland for Christmas this year.
Actor Simon Gregson, who hails from South Manchester, has been starring in Corrie since 1989 and is a familiar face to soap fans worldwide. He follows in the footsteps of Corrie favourite Sam Aston (Chesney) who switched on the town’s festive lights in 2016 and comedian Dave Spikey (2015).
The much-awaited announcement came in the Breakfast Show on Leyland Festival Radio on Wednesday October 4. Martin Carlin from the Leyland Town Team popped into the studio of the local community online station to unveil the news.
Light Up Leyland is getting bigger every year
He said: “Light Up Leyland is getting bigger every year and it’s a real coup for our town to secure Simon as the celebrity for this year’s celebrations. I think he’ll be impressed with our efforts, apart from the festive lights, this year we are launching a snow globe and an ice rink over the weekend.”
This year’s switch-on, along with the street market, food stalls and live entertainments, will take place along Hough Lane on Saturday November 25. The ice rink will also be open on Sunday November 26.
