DUST down your Santa hats and crack open the crackers! Christmas is coming to Leyland over the weekend of November 24-26 with the eagerly anticipated 2017 Leyland Christmas Festival — and there’s festive fun for everyone on offer.
The highlight will be the personal appearance of Corrie star ‘Steve McDonald’ on Saturday night. Actor Simon Gregson, who has played the Steve McDonald role since the 1980s, will be throwing the switch to officially ‘Light Up Leyland’ round about 5.30pm on Saturday November 25. Don’t miss it!
Before that, on Friday November 24 from 4pm the Leyland Cross Christmas Lights – at the end of Towngate – will be officially switched on.
The seasonal festivities begin in earnest on Hough Lane on Saturday from 1pm when our town’s main thoroughfare will be closed to traffic. Along the high street there will be a host of craft, gift and food stalls, funfair rides and a snow globe. Plus, a true festive first for Leyland, an ice rink situated on Balfour Court next to Leyland Market.
Between 1-5pm on Saturday, Santa’s Grotto will be open enabling youngsters to meet with the man himself – get the gift requests in early, it’s never too soon, folks!
From 1.15pm on Saturday, local singers and bands will entertain with live music from the stage at the heart of Hough Lane. As nightfall closes in, Steve McDonald will be interviewed and invited to throw the switch and our festive season begins.
The weekend’s fun continues on Sunday November 26 as the ice rink will be open throughout the day.
As Leyland Neighbourhood Forum posted recently: “Local organisations put a lot of work into Christmas events, so do try to support them – there is something for everyone. Remember that shops, cafes, bars and restaurants also make an extra special effort at Christmas, so eat, drink and shop local whenever you can.”
