COUNCILLOR Harry Hancock is the new Mayor of South Ribble for 2019/20. He was officially sworn in at the Annual Council Meeting on Wednesday 15 May 2019.
Councillor Hancock’s wife Marion was also confirmed as the new Mayoress of South Ribble.
Accepting his new role as First Citizen of the Borough, Mayor Hancock said: ““It’s a great honour to even be proposed as Mayor – let alone be elected – so for me this is a huge privilege. Marion and I are certainly looking forward to the coming year and promoting South Ribble.”
The Mayor went on to announce his chosen charities for his mayoral year: Derian House, St Catherine’s Hospice, and Heartbeat.
Harry’s background is in the armed services and police, having worked in various mounted officer sections across the North West. As a young lad, he was part of the Royal Horseguards; one component of the Household Cavalry.
Marion and Harry have been married for 27 years and between them, they have four children and five grandchildren.
Mayor Hancock said: “Our diary is already filling up fast, which we’re really excited about. We can’t wait to get going and start meeting new people and all the incredible organisations in South Ribble – be they businesses, volunteer groups, charities or community groups.
“Of course, we’re excited for Penwortham Gala, Leyland Festival on Saturday 15 June and the rest of the summer calendar, like Lostock Hall Carnival.
“But most importantly for us, we want to raise as much money as we can for our charities. The work they do at Derian, St Catherine’s, and Heartbeat is absolutely amazing and we are so proud to be supporting them over the next 12 months.”
The Mayor is a Manchester United supporter who also enjoys gardening, reading and watching television.
He is also a longstanding member of Penwortham Town Council, having racked up 20 years there.
