TRADERS at Leyland Market are celebrating after being nominated for a top award
Judges at the Lancashire Tourism Awards were so impressed by the market’s friendly stall-holders, excellent food hygiene and dedication to locally-sourced produce, they short-listed it in the “best retail experience” category.
Councillor Phil Smith, South Ribble Borough Council cabinet member for regeneration and leisure, said: “This is fantastic news for the market and I congratulate each and every trader who has helped make the market into the wonderful, bustling community hub it is today.
“Their dedication in going the extra mile for customers, and for continually coming up with promotions and events to draw in new visitors is commendable. It is that care and attention that makes our market stand out from the crowd.”
The three-day market (Tuesday, Friday and Saturday) has a wide range of stalls offering locally-sourced produce. Locals flock to buy fresh fruit & veg, fish, cakes, and to visit the specialist butcher. Every food stall holds a five-star hygiene rating.
There’s also plants, slippers, dance wear, alterations, greetings cards, ornaments and a whole host of other goodies for sale in the market hall, on Northcote Street near Hough Lane.
As well as its top quality produce, the market was commended for working with the community. This year market bosses joined forces with South Ribble Borough Council to stage the popular Taste of Leyland food festival. Stall holders also get involved in the Leyland Christmas Festival and Leyland Festival in the summer every year.
Councillor Smith added: “We’ve long known that Leyland Market is the place to go for all the best bargains, to have a brew with friends, or just to catch up on the local news – and now it looks like the rest of the county is going to be let into our secret too! I would encourage everyone to love Leyland and to shop locally.”
Finalists in each category will now be interviewed by the judges, with the winners announced at a glittering ceremony on Thursday, 9 November at the world-famous Blackpool Tower Ballroom.
Ruth Connor, Chief Executive of Marketing Lancashire said, “Those who have reached this stage of the competition are to be congratulated, as applications increase each year and the field of competition grows. We wish all the finalists the very best of luck and look forward to sharing their success, with the support of colleagues across the industry, at a spectacular event in the country’s most famous ballroom, in the UK’s favourite seaside resort, Blackpool.”
