FAMILIES and businesses are being asked to put their best foot forward and take part in a walk across Morecambe Bay to raise funds for Derian House Children’s Hospice.
The Morecambe Bay Walk 2018 will be led by the Queen’s official guide to the sands, Cedric Robinson MBE, and aims to raise a record-breaking amount for the charity’s silver anniversary year.
Derian fundraisers are hoping to get 250 intrepid walkers to make the journey, to mark 25th years of supporting children and young people with life-limiting conditions and their families.
The walk takes place on Sunday, August 19 from 11.30am. Setting off from Arnside Promenade and arriving at Kent’s Bank, the walk is approximately eight miles and takes around three hours.
Susie Poppitt, Fundraising Consultant at Derian House, has taken part in the walk every single year for the past 22 years to raise money for the children and young people at Derian House. She said:
“In this, our 25th anniversary year, we want to break all records, both with the number of people taking part, and the amount of money raised, so we’re hoping to make it the best cross bay walk ever!
“This is a fantastic event, and a great day out for all the family, finishing with the opportunity to enjoy some of the wonderful food at the beautiful Netherwood Grange Hotel, where we have the Terrace Bar, overlooking the bay, reserved for us. Not only will you have a fun day out, you will also be raising money for a wonderful cause.”
Derian House Children’s Hospice is currently supporting more than 350 families who have a child with a life threatening illness, and a further 245 who are receiving bereavement support. As well as end-of-life care, Derian aims to bring love and laughter to our young people and their families, giving them a chance to make precious memories together.
It costs almost £4million per year to keep the doors open at Derian House, but less than seven per cent of this comes from government funding. For the remainder, we rely on the generosity of our supporters.
Morecambe Bay Walk 2018 registration costs £10 per adult and £5 per child. If you would like to take part, contact our Fundraising Team on 01257 271271, who will send you an application and information pack, including sponsorship form.
